Thirsting 3/31/20

“As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.” (Psalm 42:1-2a)

Lord, how foolish to pretend that the things of this world would satisfy me, even as my soul was restless, even as my heart longed for what it did not know or could not see. Always wandering, always seeking an elusive phantom that promised fulfillment, just beyond the next hill, across the next river. Seeking, but only finding shadows, only finding the emptiness of a dry land.

But then, by Your grace, You whispered in my ear; You touched my heart; You awakened my spirit. It was then I knew the great thirst that was within me. In You and You alone can my soul be satisfied. You called and I came, for in You is life. And now, Lord, I come to be filled, for You have emptied me. You have emptied me of my illusions, you have emptied my heart of the idols I loved.

I came to You with nothing of value to offer You. I was dead, yet You gave me life. I was filled with sin, yet You cleansed me. I was blind, yet You gave me sight. Father, I come to the living waters as the deer pants for flowing streams. I come to be filled with the water that will spring up within me unto everlasting life.

Lord, I come to the waters, not for just a sip, but to be filled, to be filled to overflowing. Empty me more that I might receive more of You. Empty my heart of all that is not You, that in You I might live, and move, and have my being. Lord, I have been too easily satisfied, for I have settled for that which does not bring You glory. Fill me that I may live for Your glory. Fill me with the pure water that only You can give.

My soul thirsts for You, the living God. To You, my Creator, my Redeemer, I give all that I am that You might make me all that You want me to be. Amen.
