Back to the Future 4/24/20

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things unseen.” (Hebrews 11:1)

Movies and books about time travel have been popular for a long while. The first such book that I read (a long time ago) was H. G. Wells’ “The Time Machine.” It is often interesting to ponder what might happen if we could go back in time or go ahead in time.

We know that God sometimes gave the Old Testament prophets glimpses into the future. They sometimes saw the judgments coming against Israel. They sometimes saw things relating to the coming of the Messiah. They sometimes were shown about the final consummation, Christ triumphant, the final judgment, and the everlasting kingdom.

God has also given us a glimpse into the future. We see that through faith. Things hoped for, things unseen, are made real to us through faith. We can’t see these things with our physical eyes, but we can “see” them with the eyes of faith.

With the eyes of faith, we can see ourselves passing through the valley of the shadow of death, and we can see Christ with us. With the eyes of faith, we can see every knee bow at the name of Jesus and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. With the eyes of faith, we can see God wiping away every tear. We can see God as He declares that He is making all things new, and death, sorrow, crying, and pain pass away forever.

These things all will definitely happen in the future, and we can see them now with the eyes of faith. One day faith will be sight. One day we will see and will not need faith to see. We will praise God and say, “Yes! This we have seen. This we see.” By faith we see our eternal home, prepared for us by God. And we will worship and praise the Lamb of God who took away our sins and clothed us in His righteousness.

Faith is the evidence of things unseen. Amen.

Pastor Mike
