FIREWORKS

Yesterday, we were in Windom for their Independence Day celebration. I had a pulled pork sandwich, ate some homemade ice cream, watched a parade, and later watched the fireworks show.

I had my head against the back of my chair as I focused my eyes on the night sky, now lit up with brilliant displays of exploding colors. My eyes remained focused on the sky, ignoring everything else around me.

As I watched, I was reminded that one day I will see a display that will make our fireworks seem like nothing. Believers are given a promise, “We know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.” (I Jn 3:2)

We will see Him as He is. And, how is He? “Bless the Lord, O my soul! O Lord my God, you are very great! You are clothed with splendor and majesty, covering yourself with light as with a garment.” (Ps 104:1-2)

Not only does He cover Himself with light, He is light. “God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.” (I Jn 1:5)

In the fireworks display I was watching, the lights and colors were temporary. They had to be replenished, one explosion following another. God’s light is permanent and doesn’t vary. While the fireworks flashed across our vision, God’s light permeates our souls.

Finally, the show was over, and we left in darkness. God never leaves us in the dark. We are commanded to walk in the light. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (Jn 8:12)

Come to the Light. “The sun shall be no more your light by day, nor for brightness shall the moon give you light; but the Lord will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory.” (Isa 60:19)
