God's Own 4/4/20

“Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.” (Isaiah 43:1b)

In Scripture, whenever a man is confronted by God or the heavenly, there is fear. When Isaiah first saw God, he exclaimed, “Woe is me!” He trembled because in the presence of God’s holiness, he knew his own sinfulness. When the Apostle Peter had an early encounter with Christ’s divinity, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, and said, “Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” Confronted with God’s holiness, the awareness of our sin causes us to fall down before Him and tremble.

But here, God says, “Fear not.” And He gives us three reasons why we shouldn’t fear.

First, “I have redeemed you.” We lived in bondage to sin. Our sin separated us from God, and there was nothing we could do about it. There was no possible way we could earn God’s favor, no way that we could atone for our sin. The Son of God took on human flesh to become our sacrifice, to pay our penalty. The transaction was completed on the cross. We now belong to Him, because He has redeemed us. We are His.

Second, “I have called you by name.” God knows us intimately. He knows our name. He knows our heart. He knows our spirit. As a father knows his children, so our heavenly Father knows us. “So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God.” (Ephesians 2:19)

Third, “you are mine.” Since the redeemed belong to God, He protects them for all eternity. Jesus said, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.” As the old chorus says, “Safe am I in the hollow of His hand.”

God has redeemed us. He calls us by name. We are His. Fear not. Amen.
