Holy Ground 4/18/20

“Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, ‘Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.’ And he was afraid and said, ‘How awesome is this place!’” (Genesis 28:16-17a)

Here, as Jacob slept, God appeared to him. The covenant that God had made with Abraham and Isaac was now renewed with Jacob. Jacob awoke and was afraid. “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it. How awesome is this place!”

When Moses approached the burning bush on Mount Horeb, He came into the presence of God. God told him, “Do not come near, take your sandals off your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.” Moses hid his face because he was afraid to look at God.

Before the Israelites’ battle against the city of Jericho, Joshua encountered the commander of the Lord’s army, an appearance of the preincarnate Son of God. Joshua fell on his face and worshiped Him. “Joshua, take off your sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy.”

In each of these accounts, encountering God took place on holy ground, because wherever the Lord appears is holy. For Moses and Joshua, standing on holy ground meant removing their sandals. In Jacob’s case, he awoke and said that the Lord was in this place and he did not know it.

For those who belong to Christ, for those who have been saved, we hear Paul asking, “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God?” When we are saved, the Holy Spirit comes to live within us. Thus, wherever we are, we are on holy ground, because the Holy Spirit is with us and in us. We must always conduct ourselves with reverence and love because we are always on holy ground.

I’m afraid some Christians are like Jacob. Surely the Lord is in this place, and I didn’t know it. Believers, you are standing on holy ground. Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. How awesome is this place!
