“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” (Lamentations 3:22-23)
We live in a world where things grow old and run down. It happens to cars, it happens to appliances, and, unfortunately, it happens to us. I can well remember when I was a young college athlete and saw those middle-aged, out-of-shape men huffing and puffing as they were shooting baskets. I said to myself, “That will never happen to me. I will always be in shape.” Guess what? It happened to me. I have no illusions about getting back out on a wrestling mat. Those days are long behind me.
Wouldn’t it be nice to have something that never wears out? Something that never runs out? Something that is always new and fresh? Guess what? We do.
God tells us that His love never ceases; His mercies never come to an end. He is unlimited. It is impossible to come to the end of God, to the end of His love and mercy. Not only do they never cease, not only do they never come to an end, but they are new every morning. They don’t grow old. Each morning they are fresh and new and as strong as ever.
In a world where things constantly change, where things wear out and get old, there is One who never changes, One who is the source of life, and that life is always new. God does something for us that we can’t do for ourselves. He says, “I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you.” (Ezek 36:26) In Christ we become a new creation. In Him we walk in newness of life.
Great is Your faithfulness, O Lord.
