No Looking Back 4/3/20

“No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.” (Luke 9:62)

God has never called anyone to be a part-time Christian. Neither does God have a retirement program for Christians. When God saves you, it is for life, it is for all eternity, and it is for an active life in Christ. There is no idle watching from the sidelines. Christians are not authorized to coast. “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:10)

Jesus said, “If anyone would come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me.” (Luke 9:23) The call to deny oneself and take up one’s cross is a daily call. I can’t call in sick. I can’t request a vacation. Each day I am required to deny myself and take up my cross and then to follow Christ. Each day.

I am not fond of heights. Once we were at a water park, and, somehow, I was talked into going down a very, very high slide. All the way up the stairs I questioned my decision. Finally, I was lying in the pool at the top. The attendant pushed me over the edge with his foot, and I was committed. No stopping. No turning back. I was on my way to that pool far, far below.

Sometimes people think about coming to Christ, but they aren’t willing to make that commitment. They want to hang on to part of the old life; they want to retain some illusion of personal control. Without letting go, there is no journey.

It’s not just about what one gives up. It’s also about what one gains. The wonderful thing is that, while much of what we look forward to will come in the future, when we stand before Christ, there is much that we receive here and now. We receive countless blessings, peace, joy, and the fellowship of our Lord. The things we leave behind are cheap imitations of the treasures that await us in Christ.

“Forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:13) Amen.
