Old and New 5/1/20

“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” (Lamentations 3:22-23)

As we grow old, we experience the effects of time. There are abilities and capabilities I once had that have greatly diminished, some that have ceased altogether. There are family and friends who are dead and buried; I can no longer call on them for advice or comfort. Many of the things I once enjoyed are gone; they exist only as memories now. (How I used to love getting a cherry phosphate at a soda fountain!)

As the years speed by, the Bible reminds us: “As for man, his days are like grass; he flourishes like a flower of the field; for the wind passes over it, and it is gone, and its place knows it no more.” (Psalm 103:15-16) We are born; we grow old, and we die. Even the things that once filled our lives disappear.

Yet in the midst of our short time on this planet, we are reminded that not all things grow old, not all things are destined to deteriorate and die. The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases. When I awake in the morning, whether I am seven or seventy, the Lord’s love is always there, as strong, as new, as fresh as it ever was and as fresh as it will always be. God’s mercies are not only without end, they are new every morning. Each day is filled with brand new mercies, each day God pours them out afresh upon us.

Because of God’s great faithfulness, those whom Christ has purchased can say as Job said, “For I know that my Redeemer lives, and at the last he will stand upon the earth. And after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I shall see God.” (Job 19:25-26) We are also told, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” (II Corinthians 5:17) The old has passed away, and the new has come. In Christ, even we will be new, new forever.

Great is Your faithfulness, O God! We will praise You as long as we have breath. And when you give us our new bodies, we will praise you forever, filled with Your love that never ceases and Your mercies that never end. I will praise You, Lord, with my whole heart. Amen.
