Study, Do, Teach 5/5/20

“For Ezra had set his heart to study the Law of the Lord, and to do it and to teach his statutes and rules in Israel.” (Ezra 7:10)

How do we please the Lord? How do we live our lives in such a way that we bring honor and glory to God? Ezra leaves us a good example.

First, Ezra set his heart to study the Law of the Lord. Ezra made the study of God’s word a priority in his life. He “set his heart” on this.  He made a commitment to put God’s word ever before him. He set his heart, not just to read God’s word, but to study it. He saw God’s word as food for his soul, as life for his spirit, as the authority by which to live and to worship God.

To get an understanding of how we should approach God’s word, of how important God’s word should be to us, read Psalm 119. Here David said that God’s word gave him life. He said that he hid God’s word in his heart that he might not sin against Him. He said that he loved God’s law and that it was his meditation all the day. God’s word is vital, necessary, required for the Christian life. Set your heart, dedicate yourself, to study God’s word.

Ezra didn’t set his heart to study the Law of the Lord as an intellectual exercise. He was determined to study it and to do it. James tells us to be doers of the word and not hearers only. We read God’s word that we might, under the direction and power of the Holy Spirit, live it. It should change the way we think and the way we live, always seeking to honor God with the life He has given to us.

And, finally, Ezra set his heart to teach God’s word. All of us may not be called to the office of pastor, evangelist, or teacher, but we all are to be teachers of the word. Parents are to teach their children; the older are to teach the younger. We all “teach” by the way we live. Living obedient, faithful lives teaches those around us about the God we serve. As Paul says, we become "living letters" to the world.

Let us set our hearts, let us commit ourselves to study God’s word, to do it, and to teach it. Amen.
