The Lamp Lighter 5/16/20

“For it is you who lights my lamp; the Lord my God lightens my darkness.” (Psalm 18:28)

Back in the days when I worked for EDS (Electronic Data Systems), and later for Hewlett-Packard after they bought EDS, we had annual performance reviews. There were certain traits that were looked for and expected of employees in how they worked and in their attitude towards work. One of these traits was “is a self-starter.” Now, what this meant was that an individual didn’t have to always be told what to do and how to do it. You were expected to see what needed to be done and do it without having to be prodded along. You were able to motivate yourself to get your job done.

When it comes to things spiritual, we can’t be a self-starter. Before God saves us, we are dead in our sin. We don’t do good; we can’t do good; we don’t want to do good. God is the lamp lighter. He lights our lamp; He gives us spiritual life; He transforms us so that we have the desire and the ability to serve Him and worship Him. Through Christ, He adopts us into His family. This we can’t do for ourselves. Only the Lamp Lighter can light our lamp.

The Browns had a hit song in 1959 called “The Old Lamplighter.” It was about the days before electric lamps when a lamplighter had to manually light the lamps each evening along the streets and in the parks. Part of the lyrics said: “He made the night a little brighter wherever he would go, the old lamplighter of long, long ago.” As God lights our lamps, He lightens our darkness. His light shines in us, His light goes with us, as we live in and walk through a dark world. His light shines in every circumstance we face, giving us comfort, direction, and peace.

With our lamps lit, we carry His light with us. In love and gratitude, we carry His light to share with others who still struggle in the darkness. May we let His light shine so that those in darkness will look to the light, that their lamps may be lit by the Lamp Lighter. Let His light shine through you. Amen.
