What We Know 4/25/20

“We know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true, and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.” (I John 5:20)

In this passage, John gives us a statement of fact followed by the consequences of that fact. He starts by telling us something that we know, something that believers know.

We know that the Son of God has come. The eternal Word of God, who is with God and who is God, became flesh and dwelt among us. We know about His life, His death on the cross, and His resurrection from the dead. We know that He will return and that every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that He is Lord.

We also know that God has given us understanding. We can understand spiritual truth, not yet exhaustively, but truly. When He saved us, the Holy Spirit was sent to give us spiritual life. The bondage of sin was removed, we were moved from the darkness into His marvelous light, and we became His own.

With this knowledge, with this understanding, come two consequences. We may know Him who is true. We may know Christ, who said, “I am the way and the truth and the life.” The world cannot know Him, but to those whom He has redeemed, He has given the right to become the children of God. We may know Him, the real Jesus of the Bible, the real Jesus who lived, died, and was resurrected, not the mythical Jesus that the world imagines.

Not only do we know Him, but we are in Him. We are in Christ our Savior. We are one with Him through the Holy Spirit. We belong to Him, and He cares for His own.

We know Christ has come. We know that He has given us understanding. Because of this, we can know Christ as our Lord and Savior. Because of this, we can know that we are in Christ, who is the true God and everlasting life. Amen.
